Making Your Presence Recognized By Showing Up - The Secret To Improving Your Resume
I find it fascinating to listen to success stories shared by middle-aged and older people. It never fails that there was always some choice bits that I would part away with. Now that I am “one of those folks” I see that looking back into my “bag of tricks”, I have a lot of accumulated wisdom that could probably aid those that are starting their walk into the doors of the entertainment business with resume in hand. You dreams or the positions you intend to fill don’t really matter and this is true for everybody else. I called this theory the “showing up” principle. It’s not hard to do and it’s efficient most of the time.
There are a lot of possibilities like meet-ups and networking opportunities to distribute your resume that you can grab hold of when you live in big cities like Los Angeles and New York. As you start to go to those you will notice that your business cards start to stack up and your Rolodex begins to miraculously grow. If you are smart and keep in touch with those who you have met, then your circle of business associates is ever-growing and therefore your chances for success have widened. However, how can you put yourself in such situation? Well, you can put yourself in that kind of position by using the principle of “showing up”.
One of the most overlooked principle of wisdom is the principle of Showing Up. For example, I am sure you all know and adore the highly successful sitcom, “Friends”. But how many of you know about how this theory really worked for one of the members of the characters?
The tale goes like this, there was an extra who got fed up of working small time acting jobs, but despite this he still decided to show up for work one more time. He was getting tired with his current part, but he liked the job and so he decided to show for work one once more. That day changed his life. While he was at the back room the director of “Friends” started searching for someone who knows how to operate a cappuccino and machine, this extra raised his hand despite the fact that he actually has no idea how to use the device and he became part of the scene. That extra person soon gained the character name of Gunther, who owns the famous coffee shop and he became a regular on one of the most popular TV shows of all time. What did he do? He showed up.
The Showing Up theory is one that everybody can take part in, almost everywhere. Be around those that are successful in whatever you are pursuing. As long as you can do it then you attending classes, events, film conventions, and premieres with your resume may work to your advantage. It has always proven out even in my personal life. Who knows, may be your everyday life will transform just for the reason that you showed up.
