Plantation Sweet Rocket A Must In The Garden

April 7th, 2010

I’m glad to have met Sweet Rocket (Hesperis) for it surely has filled a need in my garden border. It is a hardy biennial and easy to grow, doing well in full sun or partial shade. And, although it is drought resistant, it blooms freely in wet seasons. Besides, any good garden soil seems to suit it.

Sweet Rocket has a long season, blooming in July and early August in the Midwest. It is very easily grown from seed and self sows almost too much unless cut back after flowering. It grows from 2 to 3 feet tall and looks much like hardy phlox, although not so compact. Flowers are purple, lavender, orchid and white. They make lovely cut flowers for arrangements and work in very nicely with roses and other larger flowers.

Thalia Daffodil

Give a Thalia daffodil its proper setting, in a rock garden, on the edge of a pool, or in front of evergreens in a foundation planting, and when it blooms you will find that you have captured the spirit of spring.

This daffodil is my favorite flower for many reasons. It’s exquisite both in form and creamy white coloring and has more poise and personality than many of the large coarser varieties. It is adaptable to many kinds of soil, is absolutely hardy here in northern Pennsylvania, grows and blooms in sun or part shade, and will combine beautifully with almost any other spring flower.

Thalia is an inspired addition to plantings of woodsy things in part shade, just right in front of ferns and Virginia bluebells, and perfect in a bed of blue violets. Used as a corsage it resembles an orchid and is lovely by itself or with a foil of forget-me-nots or similar material. It is also good for cutting and forces well.

This daffodil is a Triandrus hybrid with usually two or three flowers to a stem. It does not have the reflexed petals which are characteristic of the type.
