The Two Common Characteristics of Bonsai Pot and Bonsai Table

February 6th, 2011

Let’s have a quick look’ at the bonsai pot and bonsai stand. From a design angle, they have two common aspects: symmetry and balance. Many of them are more conventional than others, but they are generally perfectly symmetrical. In this case, we do not include other bonsai factors such as Chinsee figurines and slabs which are uneven.

We can start with looking at the balanced bonsai stands first.

It is very likely that many of us know the two most typical approaches of putting bonsai containers on bonsai stands. In the first case, the bonsai pot is put absolutely in the center of the bonsai stand. The whole set-up has one axis of symmetry that goes through the center of the pot in additional to the center of the bonsai stand. The two make up one visual object. Their placement, relative to each other is neutral. The role of the bonsai display stand/bonsai table is to be an addition of the pot and elevate the tree into a more formal and honorable position. It adds grace and weight. And it’s surely elegant.

As in the other case, it shows an uneven placement of the bonsai pot. We have two axis of symmetry and we are dragged to look at the bonsai pot and bonsai stand as two separate objects. Depending on the position of the pot, we can draw back and forth the visual center of gravity of the bonsai stand/bonsai pot universe.

Examining the two cases, the first one has a constant balance. The second one has some tensity and action caused by the shift. However, the two placements are neither right nor wrong. Whether or not they are appropriate will depend on how they act upon the overall appearance.
