Shatner and Nimoy are two of the Star Trek cast who suffer from deafness. Former Miss America Heather Whitestone suffered from a deafness issue. Modern medicine helped Heather survive a life threatening illness as a child, but subsequently left her quite difficult of hearing.

When she was crowned Miss America in 1995, she became the first deaf female to do so. Eight years later, she was able to undergo a cochlear implant making it achievable for her to finally hear what people had been truly saying.
